Basic information

The Department of Heritage Science engages in interdisciplinary research on cultural heritage and supports the preservation, study, and use of artistic monuments, architecture, historic settlements, and cultural landscapes. It examines the hidden characteristics of cultural heritage objects for the purposes of dating, provenance determination, and archaeometry.

The department develops diagnostic methods for monitoring and researching material transformation and behavior under stress. It creates methods for non-destructive and minimally invasive testing of materials from both historic and existing building stock. It improves methodologies and procedures for the inspection and preventive protection of historic buildings, particularly in relation to weathering and climatic influences. Additionally, it develops innovative techniques for repairing historic structures and conducts experimental research on wood mechanics at the material level.

The department also focuses on diagnosing structural failures and applying methods for monitoring and measuring moisture propagation in constructions, particularly wind-driven rain and biological deterioration of buildings. It examines the relationships between regional history and historic buildings, traces of historical construction techniques, and historic urbanism.

Research also includes methods for managing historic buildings and settlements, as well as assessing the impact of global challenges and risks on cultural heritage, including the effects of excessive use, such as tourism. The department promotes public engagement, especially among young people, in cultural heritage research. It collaborates with national and international heritage institutions in planning and conducting research in the field of heritage science.

Furthermore, it actively participates in educational programs in the field and makes research infrastructure accessible to students through the Starcaise program.
