The research carried out at the Department and Laboratory of biomechanics is focused on:
- Experimental determination of mechanical properties of biological tissues
- Determination of mechanical and microstructural properties of artificial biocompatible structures used in regenerative medicine
- Optimization of material models of tissues and biocompatible materials and their implementation in numerical simulations
- Optimization of orthopaedic implants and tissue scaffolds, including the analysis of their interactions with the surrounding tissues
The team develops proprietary specialized experimental equipment and software for detailed biomechanical analysis of the studied materials. The Laboratory of biomechanics provides facilities for the experimental research as well as for design, commissioning and testing of innovative testing equipment and state-of-the-art evaluation procedures.
Research activities
- Development of proprietary evaluation procedures and software tools including digital volume correlation of time-lapse CT data
- Application of numerical methods and inverse simulations of material properties
- Utilization of xCT and time-lapse radiographical methods
- Experimental research in the Laboratory of biomechanics -- Multi-scale evaluation of bone and tissue scaffolds mechanical properties -- Micro-hardness measurements -- Bending tests -- Uni-axial compressive/tensile tests -- Simulation of in-vivo conditions (fluid flow, temperature) during experimental procedures
Engineering activities
- Development and assembly of proprietary experimental devices for biomechanical testing and testing of quasi-brittle materials
- Development of proprietary control systems and related software based on recent CNC concepts
